Generation Eight - Richard Breach and Mary Cheal 1814 - 1943

This generation of the Breach family lived in East Sussex. Places include, Eastbourne, Hastings, Polegate, Westdean and Wilmington.

G8 - Richard Breach and Mary Cheal 1814 - 1903

Richard Breach was born on the 20th of February 1814, the son of Richard Breach (b. 1776) and Elizabeth Dennis (b. 1777). The seventh of nine children, he was born in the village of Westdean, East Sussex and worked as an agricultural labourer.

Richard married Mary Cheal (b. 1818) on the 11th of December 1841 at All Saints Church, Westdean. They lived at New Barn Cottages in nearby Exceat and brought up nine children.

After Mary died on the 4th of April 1887, Richard moved to Eastbourne and lodged with the Dann family while still working in agriculture.

By 1901 Richard had retired and moved in with his sister Barbara Waller, who lived in Eastbourne. He died on the 17th of July 1903, aged eighty nine.



Mary Cheal 1818 - 1887

Mary Cheal was born on the 14th of June 1818 in Westdean, the daughter of Edward Cheal (b. 1793) and Jane Potter (b. 1792), and was brought up in nearby Fox Hole. She was the second of nine children.

Mary married Richard Breach at the age of twenty three in December 1841. She and Richard had nine children together.

Mary died on the 4th of April 1887 at the age of sixty nine.


Richard and Mary had nine children as follows:


1. Emma 1842 - 1920

Emma was born in 1842 in Westdean, the eldest child of Richard and Mary. She is recorded as working as a laundress in 1891. She married John Samuel Sutton Sinden (b. 1843) (son of Samuel Sinden and unknown) on the 4th of July 1863 in Westdean. John worked as a plasterer.

They moved to Eastbourne and had ten children as follows:
  1. Charles F (b. 1864)
  2. Emma J (b. 1866)
  3. Elizabeth M (b. 1868)
  4. William S (b. 1870)
  5. Rose P (b. 1872)
  6. Sarah A (b. 1874)
  7. Albert F (b. 1876)
  8. Frances (b. 1878)
  9. Walter G (b. 1881)
  10. Percy (b. 1885)
Emma died in 1920 and John died in 1925.



2. Sarah Ann 1843 - 1926

Sarah Ann was born in 1843 in Westedan. On the 1861 census she is shown working as a servant while living at home with her parents. She married Henry Harriott (b. 1842 In East Dean) (son of James Harriott and unknown) on the 19th of May 1866 in Westdean. The couple had no children. Sarah died in 1926 and Henry in 1907.


3. Jane 1845 - 1908

Jane (aka Jennie) was born in 1845 in Westdean. The 1861 census shows that Jane was working as a servant at the home of George Penfold, a lodging house keeper in Eastbourne.

Jane married American Edward Henry Perkins (b. Sep 1838 in Maine) (son of James Perkins and Hannah Hasey) on the 1st of January 1867 in Westdean. They emigrated to Lynn, Massachusetts shortly afterwards. It appears that Jane and Edward had no children. Jane died from liver cancer on the 21st of January 1908 at the age of sixty three. 


The parents of Edward Henry Perkins:

James Perkins and Hannah Hasey 1806 - 1890  
Edward's parents were James Perkins (b. 1807 in Bristol, Maine) and Hannah Hasey (b. 1806 in Millford, Worcester, Massachusetts). James and Hannah were married on the 23rd of March 1837 after the birth of their first four children. James was a blacksmith and they lived in Bristol, Maine before moving to Chelsea, Massachusetts. Their children were as follows:
  1. William J (b. 1830) 
  2. John W (b. 1832)
  3. Sarah Ann Latch (b. 1834)
  4. Betsey M (b. 1836)
  5. Edward Henry (b. 1838)
  6. Alvin F (b. 1840)
  7. Florana (b. 1846)
From the 1880 census it was found that Florana was widowed with the surname 'Wheeler' and had two children, Mary (b. 1870) and Herman (b. 1873). she had married William H Wheeler on the 5th of November 1868 in Bristol, Lincoln, Maine. 
Hannah (Hasey) Perkins died on the 25th of May 1882 of a brain haemorrhage. James died on the 14th of October 1890 of heart failure due to old age. His parents were named on the death certificate as Enoch and Mollie Perkins.

G9 4. David 1847 - 1920


David Breach
about 1900



David was born on the 9th of February 1847 in Westdean, the fourth child of Richard Breach and Mary Cheal. 

He married Elizabeth Fairhall (b. 1845) (daughter of Stephen Fairhall and Henrietta Miller) on the 9th of February 1867 at St Nicholas's Church, Brighton. David worked as a shepherd and the couple had eleven children. 

David died on the 21st of October 1920 and Elizabeth died on the 23rd of January 1917.

David continues the main ancestral line in Generation Nine, see below.




5. James 1848 - 1930

James was born in 1848 in Westdean. He married Louisa Relph (b. 1852) in 1873 in Eastbourne. He worked firstly as an agricultural labourer until the 1870's, then as an engine driver by the time of the 1881 census. James and Louisa lived in Hastings and had nine children as follows:
  1. Frederick James (b.1877)
  2. Albert Edward (b. 1878)
  3. Lilley Florence (b. 1880)
  4. Harry (b. 1882)
  5. Daisy (b. 1884)
  6. Mabel (b. 1885)
  7. Percy (b. 1887)
  8. William Burt (b. 1889)
  9. Minnie (b. 1892)
James died on the 21st of December 1930 and Louisa died on the 28th of January 1931, both in Hastings.


6. Albert 1851 - 1905

Albert was born on the 2nd of May 1851 in Westdean. He was a shepherd boy by the age of nine and an agricultural labourer by nineteen.

Albert sailed to America from Liverpool on board the 'Batavia', arriving in New York on the 4th of September 1871. He settled in Massachusetts where he married Isabella Young (b. Nov 1856 in Nova Scotia, Canada) on the 26th of September 1877 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts. They had two children as follows:
  1. Alberta Louise (b. 30 May 1879) ( d. 18 Aug 1879)
  2. Edith Eloise (b. 22 Jan 1883) (d. 7 Feb 1904) Married John Zenas Fortier. This line continues in Branch Line BL4, see link below.
Albert was granted Naturalization on the 20th of October 1888. He died on the 24th of October 1905 in Somerville, Mass. Isabella died in 1928.

7. Frederick 1853 - 1943

Frederick was born in 1853 in Westdean. By 1871 he was working as a shepherd. He married his first cousin Miriam Ruth Cheal (b. 1858) (daughter of Edward Cheal and Eleanor Cheal) on the 16th of December 1876. they lived for much of their married life in Wilmington, Sussex and had ten children as follows:
  1. Annie Eleanor Mary (b. 1877)
  2. Alice Louisa (b. 1879)
  3. Emily Jane (b. 1882)
  4. Charles Frederick (b. 1884)
  5. Miriam Ruth (b. 1886)
  6. Edith Clara (b. 1888)
  7. Sarah (b. 1890)
  8. Elizabeth (b. 1893)
  9. Albert Edward (b. 1895) (d. 2 Aug 1917) Albert joined the 12th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, attd. 116th Brigade Royal Engineers. He was killed in Belgium on the 2nd of August 1917 and was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery. See the CWGC website for an image of the grave.

Frederick died in 1943 and Miriam died in 1929.




8. Charles 1855 - 1877

Charles was born on the 20th of January 1855 in Westdean. He was working as an agricultural labourer by the age of fifteen. Charles died unmarried at the age of almost twenty two, on the 2nd of January 1877.



9. George Henry 1860 - 1954

George was born on the 5th of February 1860 at New Barn Cottages, Exceat near Westdean. George married his first wife Edith Clara Betts Weavers (b. 1863) (daughter of unknown and Harriet C Weavers) on the 12th of December 1881 in Hastings. They had one son as follows:

1. Herbert George Bates 1883 - 1918
Herbert was born on the 1st of April 1883 in Hastings. He married Ada May Martin (b. abt 1880 in Bristol, Gloucestershire) on the 14th of April 1906 in Hastings. They had three children as follows:
  1. Doris Margaret (b. 12 Aug 1907, Canterbury, Kent) (d. 1979, Stroud, Gloucestershire).
  2. Cyril Herbert (b. 20 Apr 1914, Sussex) (d. Oct 1991, Gloucester).
  3. Jack (b. 10 Jan 1916, St Leonards on Sea, Sussex) (d. Dec 1997, Wokingham, Berkshire). 
 
Herbert died on the 3rd of December 1918 in Abbeville, France.

George Henry worked as a fireman on the railway but lost his first wife when she died on the 4th of November 1886 at the age of twenty three.


George Henry stood beside the letter 'C' in Cavendish.


The 1991 census shows George living at 220 Railway Cottages in St Leonard's, Hastings with his mother-in-law Harriet Weavers and son Herbert.

George married his second wife Martha Dainty (b. Jan 1869 in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire) on the 10th of January 1895 in Hastings. They had seven children as follows: 


1. Amy Evelyn Ada 1895 - 1963 
Amy was born on the 9th of October 1895 in Hastings. She married George Orval Noble (b. 28 Nov 1886 in Montreal, Canada) on the 23rd of May 1919 in Toronto, Canada, where they settled. This was George Noble's second marriage, he previously married Nellie Grace Tufford (1887 - 1911) on the 22nd of September 1910 in Wntworth, Ontario. Nellie died the following year.

 

Amy Evelyn Ada Breach


Amy and George had one son, Howard Orval, born on the 15th of September 1923. He went on to marry Florence Lillian Bellchambers (b. 12 Nov 1919 in Toronto) (daughter of William James Bellchambers and Minnie Laura Davies) in 1944. Howard died on the 7th of March 1989 and Florence died on the 29th of October 1996, both in Toronto, Canada.

Amy died on the 14th of February 1963, George died on the 25th of December 1952. 






2. Eva Margaret 1897 - 1984 
Eva was born on the 2nd of July 1897 in Hastings. She married William T Crush in June 1924. She died in January 1984. No records of any children have been found.



3. Edith Mary 1898 - 2004  
Edith was born on the 30th of November 1898 in St Leonard's, Hastings. She married William Percy Almond (b. 18 Mar 1898, Rye, Sussex) on the 22nd of September 1919 in Hastings. They had two children as follows:
  1. Ronald Percy (b. 20 Jun 1925)
  2. Lilian Vera (unknown birth date) Lilian married Eric Cooper in 1946 in Eastbourne, and they had two children, Ian David (living) and Terence P (living).

4. Nellie Dorothy 1900 - 1996 
Nellie was born on the 11th of December 1900 in Hastings. She married William Albert J Sharpe (b. 1902) in 1926 in Marylebone, Middlesex. Nellie died in April 1996 and William died in 1987. No records of any children have been found.

 

5. Frank Harold 1902 - 1980 
Frank was born on the 17th of October 1902. He married Florence Rose Thorpe (b. 1903 in Harwich, Essex) in 1923 in Woodbridge, Suffolk. They had the following children:


  1. Kenneth Frank (b. 30 Nov 1923) (d. 1 Jul 1999)
  2. Barbara Rose (b. 24 Feb 1934). Married George William Hayden in 1955 and had three children (private). 
 
Frank died in 1980 and Florence died in 1995.

 

6. Phyllis May 1907 - 1992 
Phyllis was born on the 30th of January 1907 in Hastings. She married Ernest John Pike (b. 7th of Sep 1903) in 1925 in Eastbourne. Phyllis died in February 1992 and Ernest died in June 1964. No records of any children were found.

 


7. George Donald 1914 - 2001 
George was born on the 17th of July 1914 in Hastings. He married Winifred Edith Coomber (b. 13 Apr 1914 in Eastbourne) in 1939. George died in 2001 and Winifred died in 2000, both in Eastbourne.

 


Later in life George Henry built a house in Polegate (pictured below). George died on the 20th of August 1954, and Martha died just two months later on the 23rd of October 1954, in Polegate, Eastbourne.
